Charlie and Nathan on board the S-Bahn for the 45 minute trip into the city.
Unfortunately, they were doing some work on the tracks and we had to get off the train in Germering, take a bus to the next available station and then wait for the next train into Munich. Someone at that station must not have been feeling too well because this is what we found.
We finally made it into the city. Here we are at Karlsplatz. This area is full of shopping, restaurants, and some cool architecture.
We walked a short way through Karlsplatz into Merienplatz. Merienplatz has the famous Glockenspiel on the front of the Neurathaus (the new city hall). I think this was rebuilt after most of the city was demolished in WWII.
This is a picture of the outside of St. Peter's church. They ring beautiful bells every hour for about 5 minutes. It sounds really cool.
Here is a picture of the market. They have just about everything here: fruits, veggies, fish, meat, sausages and some kind of monkey liquor??? Not sure what that is.
This was outside of St. Peter's church on the wall. I wish I could read it, but I think it is a prayer. I liked the skull sculpture.
The inside of the church was very beautiful and golden (as you can see). This is the center looking toward the alter. All along the outsides are several memorials, bones of saints, treasures and other objects.
This was also in the church, I don't know what it says, but it looked cool. This church was demolished during WWII and rebuilt. There are some pictures and explanations inside of the church that tells how they did it.
Time to get warmed up with some milchkaffee and shokolade.
This is the Spielmuseum (toy museum). We did not do the tour, but instead decided that it would be fun to save it for when guests come to visit.
This was outside of the Spielmuseum. When the wind moves through it, it runs the gears which raise the top cymbol. When the cymbol gets to the top, it drops down to the other cymbol and makes a crashing noise. It is really cool.
I thought this little blue-eyed indian advertising a coffee shop was cute and looked kind of vintage.
This fountain has Goldilocks and the Wolf at the top, look at the second picture for a better view.
These next two pictures are of some government buildings. The big square is where people would gather to hear Hitler speak. I think he sometimes stood at the top of the steps of the arched building to deliver speeches. There is another, more grand area nearby (that we did not visit) where he did his more important speeches.
Here is Charlie braving the drizzle in Karlsplatz.
This is a part of the Neurathaus (the new city hall). The carvings are very intricate and up higher there are gargoyles that spit out water when it rains.
This is the famous Hofbrauhaus. We didn't go in, thinking that we will save this experience for when my parents come to visit next fall for Oktoberfest.
On the way home, Nathan had to pee so bad, he almost didn't make it! :)
